National Records And Archive Services of Malawi
Bright Joshua is a regional archivist and head of the audiovisual section of the National Records and Archives Services of Malawi (NRAS). He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematical Sciences, has worked as an intern at the Bundesarchiv Film Archive in Berlin, Germany. He has more than 9 years experience in managing and preserving audio visual archival collections. He is certified by International Federation of Film Archives through the Film Preservation Summer School and Training sessions. He also holds certificates awarded by The International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), National Film Video and Sound Archives of South Africa (NFSVA), Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives (ESARBICA) and South East Asia Pacific Audio Visual Archives Association (SEAPAVAA).
Bright Joshua has facilitated at both local and international courses, conducted research on audiovisual archives and presented at various international professional forums. In his career, he has done digitization of various formats of archival collections and developed customized electronic database for accessioning them. He also played a leading role in development of digitization standards for the Malawi government ministries and departments. He possesses vast experience on digitization of reel-to-reel film, vinyl discs, photographs, paper records, magnetic tapes and related ephemera among others. He also has published a number research papers and articles most notable one being in the FIAF film journal “Film preservation: A Malawian nightmare”.
Currently, he is coordinating a collaboration project between NRAS and Rei Foundation Limited aimed at digitizing over 500 reel films. He is also working as a consultant with Malawi National Commission for UNESCO and National Library Service of Malawi in the screening of digitized film and folktales project. Mr Joshua has expertise in analyzing and documenting existing systems used for data entry and storage of archival collections; supervision on digitization workflows for Audio-Visual collections; development of access portfolios to digitized materials through public screenings, exhibitions and electronic means; creation of backups and security measures for e-archive collections; conduct film identification, repair, cleaning, digitization, color grading, metadata collection and projection.
