Richard Ranft is Head of Sound and Vision at the British Library, with responsibility for 7 million sound and 0.5m video recordings, and 750m newspaper pages, and for bringing them together in digital form to create new services for the Library’s users. He oversees ‘Save Our Sounds’, a major initiative to preserve the Library’s existing collections and to ensure that future UK radio and record industry productions are preserved. He led the 2014-17 Europeana Sounds project that united over 0.5m sound recordings from more than 20 archival institutions and developed and launched Europeana Music, a web portal for music assets including scores, photos and recordings. He serves on the Executive Board of the International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA), and also chairs IASA’s National Archives Section.
