I am Kpogo Worlanyo Nathaniel Kwaku and a Senior Research Assistant at the J.H Kwabena Nekita Archives, Institute of African Studies,Legon. I am a Bachelor of Art degree holder in Geography and Archeology.
I have been a sound engineer since 2004 to date. During this period I have recorded, mixed and produced audio messages. I have also worked on audio materials such as cleaning and maintaining them in good working condition.
At the J.H Kwabena Nekita Archives of Institute of African Studies, my job description include digitization of audio materials for assess and master copies, ensure the quality and integrity of audio digitized files according to the best practices, managing the technical section of the database, backing up of audio files and managing with the University of Ghana Computer System, producing access copies for research use, maintain all archive digitization equipment and work with the archivist for the smooth running of the archive.
I have been digitizing audio materials since 2014 when the MAARA project began. I have so far digitized not more than 542 open reel to reel (1/4" open reel to reel).
The process of digitization include physical inspection, cleaning, per listening, inputting data of reels in the technical section of the database, enhancing audio levels, digitizing, creating of wave and mp3 formats, adding metadata to audio files and placing reels back on the shelfs.
I also performs special audio practice to very unique reels. This include moldy reels, sticky reels, spliced tapes, twisted and lossed wide reels. With special skills obtained from MAARA training, I am able to handle this unique reel to reel tapes.
I have been a participant and a resource person during SOIMA 2017 (Sustaining Sound and Image Collection) which was organized by ICCROM. The training include handling of audiovisual materials, metadata embediment and storage.
